Distinguished Municipal Attorney Award Nominations

The Distinguished Municipal Attorney Award was established to honor municipal attorneys who have reached the highest level of professional accomplishment in the representation of cities or villages, and contributions to other municipal attorneys through participation in and service to professional organizations such as the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys (MAMA) and the International Municipal Lawyers Association (IMLA).

Nominees must be currently serving or have served as a municipal attorney. Criteria to be considered for this prestigious award include leadership, successful representation of municipal interests, participation and service to professional organizations, exemplary integrity and dedication.

Only those candidates demonstrating excellence in all or at least a majority of the following ten criteria will be considered. For a list of past recipients, please see list below.

If you know of someone who might be a worthy recipient, please submit his or her name and a description of the reasons for the nomination to me by Aug. 2, 2019­. In writing your nomination, please refer to and address the following ten criteria:

  1. The nominee should be a municipal attorney who has achieved the highest level of professional accomplishment in the representation of their city or village.
  2. Assistance to other municipal attorneys through participation in the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys, IMLA, the State Bar or other professional associations.
  3. Successful representation of municipal interests before courts of Michigan. Demonstration of skills as an advocate of municipal causes.
  4. Demonstration of leadership.
  5. Scholarship.
  6. Demonstration of integrity and dedication.
  7. Efforts in planning and executing municipal projects.
  8. Contributions in a broad range of community services.
  9. Awards and honors received, including fellowships and scholarships.
  10. Other special contributions or attributes.

The MAMA Board will review the nominations and establish a pool of finalists about whom it may request additional information. If additional information is requested, you will be notified and asked to provide such information.

The award will be presented at an awards ceremony held at the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys meeting in Lansing, October 13.

After reviewing the additional information, the MAMA Board will determine which, if any, of the finalists will be chosen to receive the award.

Please note that self-nominations are not accepted, and members of the Board of Directors of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys are not eligible for nomination. Selection of recipients is made by the Board of Directors of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys.
